Libyan
Landmarks

The rich and distinguished history of Libya extends from ancient history until the Italian colonization from the Garamantes, Phoenicians, and Carthaginians to the Greek, Roman and Ottoman empires, leaving their imprints and historical landmarks which still stand today. Libya is home to the prehistoric Hawa Fteih cave and ancient ruins found in the cities of Ghadames, Germa, Shahat, Leptis Magna and Sabratha extending along the Mediterranean coast and into the Sahara desert with Italian-inspired architecture throughout Libya’s bustling cities.

Ancient City of Cyrene (known as Shahat today)

The Ancient City of Cyrene

The ancient city of Cyrene, known as Shehat today, lies in the ‘Jebel Akhdar’ or Green Mountain region and includes one of the largest expanses of Greek and Roman ruins in North Africa. It was the oldest and most important of the five Greek cities in the region. One of Shehat’s significant structures is the Sanctuary of Apollo constructed as early as the 7th century BC.

The city was nominated to The UNESCO World Heritage list in 1982, the site shares ancient history through its temples and monuments. The Tomb of Battus (pictured) served as the final resting place of Battus I of Cyrene, founder of the city and the colony of Cyrenaica.

The legendary city of Leptis Magna in present-day Khoms, Libya.

The Legendary Leptis Magna

Leptis Magna was a prominent city of Carthaginian and Roman Libya and its ruins remain within present-day Khoms, Libya. Founded in the 7th century BC by the Phoenicians, the city greatly expanded under Roman Emperor Septimius Severus transforming Leptis Magna to heights rivalling Carthage and Alexandria in the region.

The UNESCO World Heritage Site features the Arch of Septimius Severus (pictured), the Severan Basilica, colorful mosaics and its renown amphitheatre is among the best preserved in the world.

Sabratha of Libya, was the westernmost of the ancient "three cities" of Roman Tripolis.

Archaeological Site of Sabratha

The city of Sabratha was established as a Phoenician trading post along the coast and became the westernmost of the ancient “three cities” of Roman Tripolis. The city reached its peak during the Severans dynasty, doubling in size.

The UNESCO World Heritage site includes the Roman Forum, an open air market for trading goods, grand temples and civic buildings by the sea. The Famous Roman Theatre of Sabratha (pictured) remains well-preserved with intricate bas-relief carvings and decor on its stage, columns and walls.
