Leptis Magna was a prominent city of Carthaginian and Roman Libya and its ruins remain within present-day Khoms, Libya. Founded in the 7th century BC by the Phoenicians, the city greatly expanded under Roman Emperor Septimius Severus transforming Leptis Magna to heights rivalling Carthage and Alexandria in the region. The UNESCO World Heritage Site features the Arch of Septimius Severus (pictured), the Severan Basilica, and its renown amphitheatre is among the best-preserved Roman sites in the Mediterranean.
